Opening Day on SF Bay 2010

The 72nd Annual South Bay Opening Day
Boating Festival and Decorated Boat Parade

April 9-11, 2010

The public is invited to join the yacht clubs and boating organizations of the South Bay and the Port of Redwood City for the 2010 South Bay Opening Day.  This year’s theme is “Ride the Tide to the South Bay” and will compliment the PICYA Opening Day theme of “Building Bridges” to take place in the North Bay on April 25th.  See picya.org for further information.

SBOD Festival events will begin Friday evening April 9th with a wonderful dinner at Coyote Point YC and close Sunday morning April 11th with a Gin Fizz Brunch at the historic South Bay YC.  There will be lots of great exhibits, water activities and other tasty dining options to fill your weekend.  All activities (other than meals and libations) are free to the public.  Come and experience the unique resource we have in our own Redwood Creek and the fun activities around the adjacent port facilities.  Join with other yacht clubs and boating organizations in decorating, parading and having fun.  Yacht club participants will each receive PICYA Coty points.  SBOD platinum sponsor, West Marine, will be providing skipper bags, prizes and discount coupons.

All those with Sailboats, Powerboats, Jet Ski’s, Canoes and Kayaks are invited to participate in the parade in support of this community event. Organizations are encouraged to participate by sponsoring a youth group or youth program.  Register your boat now!

The highlight of the weekend will start at 10:30 am with the Opening Day Decorated Boat Parade and Blessing of the Fleet which will take place at the observation deck of the Port of Redwood City.  Spectators will vote for their favorite decorated boat to determine who will receive the coveted “Spectators Choice Award”.  Three local beauty queens will be present to collect your ballots, including our own, Jackie Harris, the newly crowned Miss Redwood City!
Enjoy the many exhibits in the Sequoia YC parking lot area Saturday, including booths by the Marine Science Institute, Police and Fire departments, West Marine/Leukemia Foundation, Dock-walkers, Linaji Photography, and the Coast Guard Auxiliary.  If you or your organization would like to participate with a booth, please contact the SBOD committee, we would love to include you in the festivities.

Water activities include; College Sailing’s Pacific Coast Championship Team Race (Saturday and Sunday) hosted by Stanford University, Coast Guard cutter Sockeye and Bay Area Multihull Association boats open for tour, Rowing club and Kayaking demos, the Sea and Mariner Scouts and Open 5.70 one-design racer rides.

After the parade as we await the judges decisions and the exciting awards ceremony, the locally famous group, Sea Shanties, with Lyle Ryan, will be playing music and entertaining you during your lunch at Sequoia YC.
